Raising safe sex awareness has always been part of my life, from initiating safer sex workshops at university to making independent documentaries to trying to ensure HIV+ women's stories were included in the Liberate! exhibition and Qtopia in 2023.
When I was 25 Chrissy, Em, Amelia and Vivienne Murno shared their stories for early development for a low-budget independent documentary made on mini-DV cameras. Chrissy and I would go on to make a one-hour documentary that became the world-first feature about an HIV+ lesbian, winning the Berlin Film Festival Teddy Award, screening at 40 festivals, breaking records as the most-watched SBS Independent documentary and is now held in the collections of 12 universities.
Vivienne's now adult son Tasman Murno recently shared the early development interview, writing 'its such important and beautifully approached community storytelling.' Many women cared for people living with HIV/AIDS+ yet are often forgotten, so women were featured at the forefront of Liberate! exhibition I curated in 2023.
Health workers St Vincent's Health Australia who opened Ward 17 Australia's first dedicated HIV/AIDS ward, featured in a series of 15 vignettes that I curated, directed by David O'Brien and exhibited at Qtopia. Ward 17 is the same place where Chrissy was wrapped in love and support.
HIV/AIDS is no longer a death sentence, but for women, gender and sexually diverse people, sex workers and many living in lower-income countries access to medication and support remains a struggle.

Queer in Warrane was a breathtaking experience. It’s stand-out aspects were the quality and intensity of the projection and the location. The way the images and sounds were created evoked intense feelings of respect for the past, happiness for the future of the LGBTQIA+SB communities, and pride in the beauty that the communities have created throughout history. Gabriel Gerard, Festival Coordinator, Sydney World Pride

Incredible and well beyond what I had in my mind.
Three paintings were animated, and 3D projection mapped onto 6.5 x 8 metres of convict-hewn sandstone walls. “It’s always very special to me to have my art home on traditional country and the land that inspired it… in my heart, to me that’s where it belongs. Dharawal, Bidjigal and Dhungutti artist Garry Purchase

"We live in a hybrid world where increasing use of mobile technology means that digital elements are embedded in everyday life and cultural participation. More people are creatively participating, and it is increasingly difficult to distinguish ‘artist’ and ‘audience’. Audiences expect to be able to insert themselves into the story of an artwork and to have access to multiple lines of communication – with performers as well as other audience members and participants." Sharing films outdoors has an immediacy that sparks conversation, it is a campfire, a circle, that really excites me. The interrelationship between site and artwork, embedded on the street, in public rather than isolated on a small device, or inside a cinema or lounge room. Jacqui North.
